Long Cheeked Snaffle Bit - Elevator Bit

For a long time I could not identify this bit, a couple of kind people have identified it as an "Elevator bit"

"This bit is known as an "Elevator". The shanks lift the bit higher in the horse's mouth. When pressure is placed on the reins, the bit rotates in the mouth and applies pressure to the poll. Obviously, the longer the shanks, the greater poll pressure is experienced. You are correct when you state that it is not used with a curb chain.

I believe it has it's origins in the western riding discipline. The metal shanks are very often (but not always) covered in leather to prevent rubbing.

For general use this bit is suited to strong horses. However, the Elevator can be a useful schooling aid to teach a horse to respect the rider's hands. It should only be used by experienced riders as it can be quite severe." - Thank you to Sharon White for this

"Just in case someone hasn't already emailed you, the bit with the snaffle mouth and same length cheeks and shanks is an elevator bit. Jimmy Williams was a famous west coast (USA) jumper trainer and I think he popularized the use of this bit. I saw them alot in the 1980's with the jumper riders." - and thank you to Karen McCarthy

The mouthpiece is a factory made jointed snaffle in stainless steel.
The long cheeks, however, have been handmade. They are flat and covered in soft leather. There is a loop at each end, and a slot for the reins opposite the mouthpiece. There is no obvious place for a curb chain, so I am not sure of the purpose of the long cheeks - would they put pressure on the poll? or stop a horse twisting its head? Suggestions gratefully received.

Dimensions : Mouthpiece 5¼" (13.2cm), Cheek length 11½" (29.2cm)
