A French military bit. Such bits were used from the 19th century until the 1940's. This example is probably from the late 19th to early 20th Century.
It has curved or pad or branched cheeks and a curved shackle or slobber bar. The mouthpiece curves upwards & narrows to form a port. The bit has a flaming bomb and crossed canon on its brass bosses / badges, (please see images).
The left boss has a dent in it. There would once have been letters or numbers stamped above each boss, they are illegible now
Very similar French bits were sometimes used by the confederate side in the civil war
