This old steel bit has a central ridged arch or port, the ends of the port protrude below the mouthpiece of the bit, they have quite sharp terminals. The bars of the mouthpiece are square in section, they are flat on their rear side, but have cast "thorns" on their front surface.
The cheeks of the bit curve backwards and have simple incised decoration. Each cheek has a swivelling rein loop at its end. There is a chain attached near the top of each cheek, and a "prong" - possibly part of a buckle?
