A wooden saddle, covered in birch bark. When I bought this saddle it was described as Japanese, but it is more likely to have come from Turkey or Persia.
It is painted over the bark with roses and geometric designs. It is also decorated with strips of bone around its edges. There is quite a lot of wear on the seat of the saddle, and some of the bone strips are missing. The pommel would originally have been shaped as two scrolls.
A saddle of this design was sold at Bonhams in London in April 2008, catalogued as 19th century & from Bukhara
Dimensions : 44cm (17¼") x 30.5cm (12") x 28cm (11")
