An early twentieth
Century child's saddle, made of wicker and in the form of a chair. The
saddle pad itself is covered in wool and stuffed with horsehair. On each
side there are two leather girth straps. Also attached are a pair of leather
toe stirrups - a child could not put their foot all the way through these
stirrups, and so could not be dragged if they fell off. These basket saddles
were used for very young children on the lead-rein. Independent control
of a pony would have been almost impossible when seated in these saddles.
