Three British Army pack saddle pads for Universal Pattern Mark V saddles. These would have been arranged on each side of the horse's (or mule's or donkey's) spine, and held together by steel arches and side bars of sabicu wood. The backs of theses saddles are made of tan leather, they are stuffed with horsehair and lined with dowlas. Fittings were available that enabled them to carry machine guns, panniers and injured men. These pads are stamped "Cliff Walsall 1943" and have an ordnance mark. Reference: Horses and Saddlery - Major G.Tylden (1965 J.A.Allen &Co.
