This antique saddle has a raised rectangular pommel and cantle. The seat is covered in quilted cream doeskin. This design of saddle was very adaptable - A man could ride astride in it. With a panel attached to one side of the seat and a foot platform or plancette attached to the other side, it becomes a sidesaddle. If panels are attached to both sides of the seat it becomes a basket or pannier
It probably dates from the early 19th century. The leather is showing its age, there are cracks on the front and back panels and a split in one of the saddle flaps. The pommel has a rather crude old repair, it has been glued & stitched. Two of the straps that hold the detachable panel on are very fragile.
So, it is a fascinating piece of history for display, but not for use.
