This saddle is made of limewood covered in gesso over papier māché. It has a two-lobed cantle, and a high arch at the front rising to a rounded double pommel. The outer surfaces are decorated with figures of people, animals and monsters. The underside is lined in red floral damask. There is some wear and damage to the gesso.
This is a copy of an unidentified parade-saddle of carved bone produced in Germany during the second quarter of the 15th Century - an original can be found in the Wallace Collection in London.
