An extraordinary pair of spurs. These are made of silver coloured metal (probably a nickel alloy such as "Alpacca").
The arms or heel bands have been finely cast to resemble the branches of a tree. The neck of each spur also has a bark-like texture and ends in a creature's head. In the animal's mouth there is a sideways mounted sharp rowel between two discs.
The spurs are fastened on to the rider's foot by chains. One set of chains on each spur fastens with a shell-shaped clasp, and the other through a hinged buckle.
I can find no maker's mark or stamp, surprising given the quality of the casting and work. They could come from Brazil, Uruguay or Argentina.
Internal width 7.8cm (approx 3"), neck 4cm (1½"), rowel 2.6cm (1")
