Pair of Swan-Necked Box Spurs by Maxwell

These are silver coloured, probably nickel spurs with steel inserts which would fit into "boxes" in the heel of the boot. The necks are curved in a swan or goose shape. The rowels are decorated with a star. Each neck is stamped "Maxwell" (a famous London boot & spurmaker whose history can be found at http://www.henrymaxwell.com/history.php). The steel parts of the spurs are also stamped with Maxwell's Dover Street address in London which probably dates them to around 1920. They are in very good condition.

Very similar spurs can be seen in Charles de Lacy Lacy's 1902 book "The History of the Spur"

Internal width 6.8cm (approx 2½"), neck 6cm (2¼"), rowel 2.5cm (1")
