These shoe shaped stirrups are made of a white metal, a nickel alloy called "Potosi silver". This was a 19th century trademark, using the name of the famous Potosi silver mines. Each is stamped with a "Potosi silver" and an eagle. The shape of the stirrups prevents the rider getting their foot trapped through the stirrup, and gives some protection from undergrowth (& weapons). There is a circular hole in the base of each, which would allow water to drain out. The fronts of these stirrups have stamped geometric and foliate decoration.
