Moseman's Illustrated Guide and Benjamin Latchford's "The Loriner" from the 1880's both show a Victoria stirrup.
This finely cast steel stirrup is fitted with a leather & suede arch. The leather buckles under the tread and a loop fits around the slot for the stirrup leather.
Possibly this padded leather was a safety device to prevent the foot becoming stuck in the stirrup iron? Or protection for boots? The iron itself is stamped "Super Steel" on its underside. I think it is late 19th Century.
It is likely to have always been a single stirrup for riding sidesaddle. I have a pair of very similar stirrups listed (stirrup106) - perhaps a little later in date & for the modern woman who rode astride?
