A pair of steel stirrups with a little surface corrosion. Each stirrup has a leather and velvet pad which buckles through the tread of the stirrup and loops over the slot where the stirrup leather attached. These pads served both to protect the rider's boots and made it more difficult for the foot to become trapped in the stirrup after a fall.
Similar stirrups are illustrated in Mosemann's catalogue and Benjamin Latchford's book "The Loriner". I have previously seen single examples for sidesaddle use (stirrup078) - but never a pair. There are no makers marks on the stirrups.
