A Pair of French cage stirrups
A pair of stirrups from France. They have been handmade in steel. Each has been made in three parts : a suspension loop, a stirrup shape with a broad rounded tread or footplate, and an "apron" of metal at the front, which is riveted onto the stirrup. This shape would protect the foot - possibly they were military? or used for riding through thick undergrowth?
The metal appears to be old, but there are no maker's marks to date the stirrups.
