For some time I debated whether these stirrups were South American, or possibly African, the arched sole and circular decoration are similar to some stirrups from the Dogon people, or Burkina Fasso.
However, the enclosed design belongs more to Latin America, the circular patterna are cast, not made from wire coils, and there are faces similar to those on some conquistador stirrups.
I am still open to suggestions about their origins.
They are heavy & cast in bronze. There are concentric semi-circles decorating the front and sides. The edges of the stirrup have a twisted rope finish. There is a fece on each side. On the underside of the stirrup there are three metal bands supporting the sole - similar to Iberian stirrups. At each toe there are two drainage triangles They have substantial suspension loops - necessary given their weight. The metal has a very good patina, with a little verdigris in places
