Silver Sidesaddle Slipper stirrup

home > stirrups

It is probably nineteenth Century and likely to be from Peru. Such slipper stirrups were used by women riding sidesaddle. The upper slipper part of this example has good cast and pierced foliate decoration. There is a central flower attached - each petal of this is made separately from coiled silver wire. The pieces are held in palce by a pin passing from the central petal , so all the pieces can turn. The arch of the stirrup is cast flowers and buds.

Strangely for such a well made piece this stirrup is not stamped or marked with a makers name, it is made of a silver metal, probably an alloy with a lower silver content than sterling or 800 silver.

Dimensions : 8¾" (220mm) x 4" (100mm), arch measures 4½" (110mm) tall Weight 1lb 6oz (615g)
