A pair of English steel stirrups, dating from the late 19th or very early 20th century. These pre-date the use of nickel or stainless steel.
They are made of steel, which could easily rust, they would be kept clean and rust free by using a burnishing pad (as the pictures show, I haven't been doing much burnishing recently).
On their undersides the stirrups are stamped "Sowter & Co" and "Haymarket", Sowter were a prestigious Victorian & Edwardian company of saddlers in central London
Dimensions : 5¼" (132mm) x 4½" (115mm) x 2" (50mm) each stirrup
