Portuguese "Body" or "Box" Stirrup
A single Portuguese stirrup. There are many examples of this style of stirrup at the Coach Museum in Lisbon. They are described in English as "body stirrups", in Portuguese they are "estribos de Caixa" ? box stirrups.
Made of wood, the curved front is covered in copper with pierced brass decoration overlying it. The metal is held in place with screws.
The arch of the stirrup is brass, there two other brass bands around the sides and base of the stirrup.
