Antique French Stirrup
This stirrup is made of steel, there is a shaped guard in front of the rectangular suspension loop on the top of the arch.
The tread or footplate is oval with a bar across its centre. The curved side arches extend below the tread and have incised decoration. There are bars forming a cage over the front of the stirrup - these prevent the foot from slipping though the stirrup, and give some protection.
I bought this as a "regulation" stirrup, implying military use, but it could be from the Camargue
