Antique African Stirrup
This stirrup is made of brass or bronze. It has a highly arched footplate or tread, with a central pierced rosette.
The sides of the stirrup are flat with engraved geometric decoration. There is an arch with a hexagonal suspension loop across its top.
The underside of the tread also has quite complex engraved decoration
This stirrup design is typically African, often associated with the Dogon people of Mali. It does share some features with Iberian and Latin American stirrups, perhaps thanks to the Arabs who travelled south through Africa and north into Spain.
