A Latchford Safety Stirrup

home > stirrups

A fine quality steel side-saddle safety stirrup. There is a little surface tarnish which could be burnished off.

The stirrup has a swinging inner arch and two part tread that separates to release the foot in the event of a fall so that the rider cannot be dragged. The inner arch would have originally been covered in leather (see images below) The tread is solid, curved at its front edge and stamped "FRONT 547" on the underside of both parts of the tread - if fitted the wrong way round the escape mechanism would not work.
The underside of the footplate or tread is Stamped "Front, 547" " Patent Latchford St Martins Lane" "Size 2" , "Hampson & Scott Makers" and "25293"

Benjamin Latchford was one of the authors of "The Loriner" published in 1871. This particular stirrup came from the Althorp Estate, the ancestral home of the Spencer family & Princess Diana.
Dimensions : 7" (174mm) tall x 4¾" (118mm) external width x 2" (50mm) tread
Weight 15½oz (439g)
