I bought these at a sale of items from the Althorp Estate (the Spencer family estate in Northamptonshire & the childhood home of Princess Diana).
They are shoe or boot covers which would have strapped onto the front of stirrup irons and protected the wearer's feet and footwear from injury & damage.
The mahogany coloured leather has a lovely patina, there are about five insect holes on the outside of one of the covers, and a few on the inside of the other. All six straps for attachment to the stirrup irons remain, four of the six steel buckles still have their finely stitched protective leather covering.
These are very rare surviving examples of a 19th century gentleman's riding equipment
