Pair of Early Steel Stirrups with Scallop Edged Round Treads

home > stirrups

A pair of steel stirrups. These have round flat treads with scalloped edges and keyhole shaped piercing.
The sides of the stirrups are curved, rather like "Hussar pattern" stirrups. They have two part suspension loops that swivel freely. There are curved arches, with slots for the stirrup leathers. The arches have inlaid silver and copper Chinese motifs
They are in good condition, with light surface oxidation / patination. There are no maker's marks.

I am not sure of the date of these stirrups - keyhole shaped piercing is seen as far back as Roman times, similar suspension loops can be seen on 16th & 17th century stirrups, the round treads fit with 17th/18th century origin, yet the "Hussar" shape might suggest a later date - more research required...

Dimensions : Width 6" (15.2cm), total height including loops 10" (25.5cm), width of tread 4½" (11.6cm)
1080g (2lb 6oz)

Ref : stirrup250
