A steel side-saddle safety stirrup complete with doeskin padding on the inner arch.
The stirrup has a swinging inner arch - when it swings forward it releases the tread or footplate on the right side, freeing the rider's foot.
The stirrup is faintly stamped on its underside "B.Cope, No. 8940", "Patent 2232".
The mechanism of the stirrup still works well. It is an antique stirrup, the metal of the arches finer than in modern examples and it has acquired a dark patina over time.
