This steel stirrup has a shaped footplate that pivots within the arch of the stirrup
I believe that the footplate was once covered in leather and would have had a "slipper" component which would have covered the front of the foot, preventing it from slipping through the iron and getting trapped
The arch itself is covered in leather (this is dry and in poor condition)
The stirrup itself is probably early Victorian, the attached stirrup leather is likely to date from the first half of the 20th century, so presumably the stirrup was used in its current condition.
