A steel side-saddle safety stirrup.
The Scott safety stirrup was patented in 1885.
This is probably an early example, later stirrups were mostly made of nickel, they had open treads and no "stop" so the inner arch could swing in both directions.
The "stop" was discontinued in 1893.
The stirrup has a swinging tread and arch that splits open to release the foot in the event of a fall so that the rider cannot be dragged.
It has a solid tread, curved at its front edge - if fitted the wrong way round the escape mechanism would not work.
The underside of the footplate or tread is Stamped "Gold Medal London" "Scott's Patent Safety" "Size 3" , "Hampson & Scott Makers" and "22054".
The silver coloured plating of the stirrup is quite worn around the arch.
