This rather glamorous whip would have been carried by a fairly wealthy Victorian gentleman. It has a cap and collar made from finely braided silver wire. There is a small dent on one side of the cap.
The whole whip is covered in braided black whalebone or balleen, it is quite rare for the whole shaft of a whip to be covered in this material, more often the lower part would be covered in braided linen or catgut. There are a few spots where this braiding has been covered with lacquer, these only show on close examination.
